Abstracted Mind!

The Interview!

By Darkzen

03/10/2027

Formed in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 2020 by singer Juli Hope and guitarist Yamil Ladner, Abstracted Mind is a Symphonic Metal band blending powerful orchestral arrangements with modern and progressive metal. Drawing on their classical training at Buenos Aires’ National Conservatory Ástor Piazzolla, both founders bring a strong orchestral sensibility to the band's music. Originally conceived as a studio project, the band debuted in 2021 with three self-produced Spanish-language singles that laid the foundation for their distinctive sound and artistic vision.

Later that year, the duo relocated to the Netherlands and began writing in English, opening their music to a broader European audience. The project evolved into a full live band with the addition of Rutger Klijn on bass and Eva Levina on drums. Since then, Abstracted Mind has delivered energetic performances across the Netherlands and appeared at the 10th Edition of the Laurus Nobilis Music Festival in Portugal.

Following the release of the singles Eternals and Despair in 2024, Where It Begins in 2025, and Rise Again in 2026, the band continued refining its blend of progressive power and cinematic drama, leading to the release of its debut album, Break Down Your Fears, on September 18, 2026.

Their musical style is Symphonic / Progressive Metal, composition, and production aim to immerse the listener in a blend of cinematic/orchestral landscapes and progressive metal.

Greetings, friends! Thank you for this interview opportunity!

AM:

Hello, thank you for having us!

Tell us a bit about the band's history and its symphonic/progressive metal musical influences.

AM:

We started the band in 2020 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, as a studio project. At the end of 2021, we moved to the Netherlands, where we decided to turn the project into a full band. Talking about influences, we listen to a lot of different genres, from classical music to extreme metal and everything in between, so we have many different influences. The ones you would probably notice the most in our music are Epica, Within Temptation, Kamelot, and even Septicflesh.

What does the band's name mean? Why did you choose that name?

AM:

We are pretty much overthinkers, so when we were choosing a name, we started looking into things related to the mind and ended up choosing Abstracted Mind because we often tend to live inside our own heads.

How did the band members come together—Juli Hope and Yamil Ladner from Argentina, and Rutger Klijn and Eva Levina from the Netherlands?

AM:

Once we were settled here in the Netherlands, we started writing songs and going to local shows to get to know people from the scene, and that’s how we met Eva. As for Rutger, we posted a call for a bassist in a Facebook group. He applied, and what can we say? With his skills, it didn’t take much to convince us!

Juli! What is your musical background? Please tell us a little about it.

Juli:

I started singing in a choir when I was around 10 years old and decided to take singing lessons when I was around 13. At that time, I thought I wanted to become an opera singer, but later I discovered metal, and that changed everything! Thanks to my classical training, though, I was able to build a solid singing technique that I could carry into my journey as a metal singer. I also play some instruments, like bass, and studied piano and flute at the National Conservatory back in Buenos Aires.

Juli! Do you have any favorite bands, singers, or musicians? Who are they?

Juli:

I listen to a lot of different genres, for real, haha. But if I had to choose. Metal: Kamelot, rock: The Warning, Melodic: Dimash, pop: Stray Kids. So it’s always very interesting to check my Spotify Wrapped at the end of the year!

Juli! Who writes the lyrics, or who collaborates on them?

Juli:

Most of the lyrics are written by me, and sometimes Yamil collaborates. Since English is not our first language, it’s always good to have a second opinion to polish things and sometimes spice them up a little.

Juli! You are about to release your full album, *Break Down Your Fears*. What is the album's concept?

Juli:

The album wasn’t conceived as a conceptual album from the beginning, but it ended up developing a common thread between the songs. You’ll find songs that deal with uncomfortable truths, with the intention of awakening something in the listener. Songs like “Eternals” and “Despair” explore how we live in the modern world and our relationship with others. “Shattered Mirror” deals with inner conflict, self-confrontation, and the way our perception of reality can become fragmented, while “Who You Really Are” is about standing up for yourself.

Overall, the idea of “Break Down Your Fears” became a kind of leitmotif throughout the album. Confronting the things that scare us, questioning what we take for granted, and looking at ourselves and the world around us without looking away.

What musical styles can be found on the album?

AM:

You’ll find symphonic metal, epic orchestras, big choirs, some progressive rhythmic elements, and the contrast between female vocals and occasional growls. There are also some darker and heavier touches, including a bit of black metal influence.

Do you have any favorite songs on the album? Why?

AM:

I would say “The Messenger From The Stars” and “Shattered Mirror.” The first one because it’s really fun to play live and because of its little black metal touches. And “Shattered Mirror” because it has a lot of contrast and represents our own style very well.

Is the album a continuous work, or are the songs independent of one another?

Will there be a new music video for any of the songs? Like the recent video for "Shattered Mirror"?

AM:

The songs are independent from each other, but some of them share common themes and ideas. So while there isn’t a single story connecting the entire album, there is definitely a common thread running through it.

For now, we’re working on some live videos from our pre-release album party, so you can expect those soon! We’d also love to make more music videos in the future.

Do you have any upcoming shows scheduled in Europe or Argentina?

AM:

It would be great to play in Argentina! But for now, we’re aiming to play across Europe. We have a concert coming up on December 2 here in the Netherlands.

What concept, musical style, or vision does Abstracted Mind offer? For those who haven't heard you yet…

AM:

Abstracted Mind is basically the result of putting together everything that inspires us, musically, emotionally, and intellectually. We play symphonic/progressive metal, but we like to move freely between cinematic and orchestral passages, modern heavy sounds, melodic sections, and darker, more aggressive moments. The contrast is a big part of what makes the band feel like us.

There’s also a common thread connecting our songs: we’re interested in introspection, self-awareness, and the things we often choose not to see. Our music is about questioning, confronting, and ultimately trying to understand ourselves and the world around us a little better.

For those who haven’t heard us yet, we’d say: expect something melodic, cinematic and heavy, with plenty of dynamics and atmosphere. And hopefully a few things that stay with you after the song ends!

Do you have any previews or sneak peeks for the fans?

AM:

You can go to our YouTube channel and watch our music videos! There you’ll find a good taste of what you can expect from the album.

Is there anything else you'd like to share with us?

AM:

We hope you enjoy our debut album, “Break Down Your Fears”! You can follow us on social media and become part of our journey.

Thank you very much for the interview with Darkzen Dragón Metal Angels!

AM:

Thanks to you for the support! It was our pleasure!

Abstracted Mind!

La Entrevista!

Por Darkzen

03/10/2027

¡Juli! Estás a punto de lanzar tu álbum completo, *Break Down Your Fears*. ¿Cuál es el concepto del disco?

Juli:

AM:

Diría que «The Messenger From The Stars» y «Shattered Mirror».

AM:

¡Esperamos que disfruten de nuestro álbum debut, "Break Down Your Fears"!

AM:

¡Gracias a ustedes por el apoyo! ¡Fue un placer!
